Instrumented Drop Test

Military ammunitions such as small arms cartridges, rocket propellant,  missiles and mortars are packed and stored inside metal containers.  These  packaging systems may be subjected to drop during handling on the ground (up to three feet) or from a truck bed (up to seven feet).  To ensure the performance and reliability of the ammunitions inside from repeated drops, the ammunition packaging system needs to be carefully designed to prevent the internal ammunition rounds from becoming damaged after drops.

Frontier has developed and installed an instrumented impact test capability to assist Army's engineers to evaluate the effectiveness of the packaging systems by measuring the peak impact load and time duration of the ammunition rounds inside.  The capability of Frontier's instrumented impact testing includes:

  • Measure acceleration and drop impact load
  • Perform horizontal, vertical and angled drops
  • Drop range up to 14 feet
  • Test up to 250 lbs
  • Test up to 4 channels at the same time
  • Up to 1 MHz sampling rate
  • Pneumatic controlled machine ensuring consistent, straight drops
  • Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) mode analysis and dynamic simulation
